Burnt by J.H., the fine-dining restaurant on East Jefferson Street in downtown Van Alstyne, is preparing to open its upstairs to more diners.

A project registered Tuesday, Oct. 13, with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation describes the work as improvements to the building's upstairs "for additional dining." The filing covers 3,814 square feet at 224 E. Jefferson St. and puts the estimated cost at $65,000.

Construction is scheduled to start Oct. 30 and finish by Dec. 30, according to the registration. It is listed as a privately funded renovation and alteration, paid for by the tenant. The tenant named on the filing is James Harrison.

The restaurant's website credits Harrison, a Dallas chef, with creating Burnt, and describes it as a modern classic restaurant with a southwestern twist offering an elevated fine-dining experience in the heart of downtown.

What the filing means

The registration lists Jeff Gutknecht of Aubrey as the registered accessibility specialist handling the review. A design firm had not been assigned as of the filing.

The registration does not say how many seats the second floor would add, whether the space would be used for private events, or whether the restaurant's hours would change. The project's status is listed as registered, the first step in the state process.
