Grayson College will add a former women's basketball star to its Athletic Hall of Fame next month, the college announced Wednesday.
Annie Lockett, who played for the Vikings in the 1987 and 1988 seasons under coach Bill Brock, will be inducted at a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 7.
According to the college, Lockett was the first All-American in the school's women's basketball history. She helped the team win its first conference championship, earned all-conference and all-region honors in both of her seasons, and as a sophomore was named the conference's most valuable player and picked for the Region V all-tournament team. The Vikings won 56 games in her two years.
"She was a difference-maker who helped elevate our program to a new level of success," Athletic Director Mike McBrayer said in the announcement.
Lockett, who grew up in Garland, credited her teammates. "We had tremendous chemistry and just had the right pieces in place," she said, adding that the group was selfless and played for one another.
After Grayson
She went on to Louisiana Tech University, where she finished her college career with 106 wins and a business management degree, and later earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix. In 1997 she tried out for the WNBA's Houston Comets; an injury ended that bid, but she practiced alongside Cynthia Cooper and Kim Perrot and kept playing semi-professionally for a time, the college said.
