Auto insurers turned down 191 applications from drivers in the 75495 ZIP code this spring, and the reason they gave most often was the vehicle itself, according to figures the Texas Department of Insurance has just put online.
The department said Thursday, Oct. 15, that it had expanded a consumer webpage on declined, canceled and nonrenewed policies to include personal auto insurance. The figures, which start in April, come from reports insurers must file under House Bill 2067, passed by the Legislature in 2025. The law also requires them to give customers a written explanation.
The tables are organized by ZIP code and do not name companies.
"By giving Texans clearer insight into why insurance decisions are made, we're empowering them to navigate their coverage with confidence," Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford said in the announcement.
Turned away at the application
Insurers sent 187 declination notices to applicants in 75495 from April through June, and a notice can list more than one reason. The make and model of the vehicle appeared on 81 of them, or 43%, a little above the statewide share of about 39%.
Other reasons came up often, too:
- a category insurers use for other actions taken by the company, on 67 notices
- claims history or driving record, on 52, or about 28%, below the statewide rate of about 35%
- credit or insurance score, on 38, or about 20%, close to the statewide share of about 19%
- the liability exposure the insurer saw in the risk, also on 38
Cancellations and nonrenewals
For actions that took effect in April, May and June, insurers reported 591 canceled auto policies in the ZIP code: 219 in April, 198 in May and 174 in June. They reported 15 nonrenewals over the same three months.
