Van Alstyne, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott appointed Don Huffines as Comptroller of Public Accounts on July 2, tapping the former state senator and Dallas-area businessman to oversee the state's finances and tax collections.

Huffines, a fifth-generation Texan who co-founded Huffines Communities, one of the largest real estate development firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, previously served in the Texas Senate representing District 16 from 2015 to 2019. He built a reputation there as a fiscal conservative focused on government transparency and limited spending.

Governor Abbott called Huffines exceptionally qualified to lead the state's finances, citing his private-sector experience and dedication to protecting taxpayer dollars. The Comptroller's office collects state taxes and fees, disburses state funds, manages unclaimed property, and oversees the Economic Stabilization Fund, commonly known as the rainy day fund.

Huffines said he intends to run government lean and keep Texas the best place to live, raise a family, and run a business. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin and begins his service August 1.
