First-Inning Surge
Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez provided the offensive spark in the opening frame, hitting two home runs to help the visitors build an insurmountable lead early. Alvarez’s first homer, a 368-foot shot to left field, drove in one run, followed by a solo shot 370 feet to left that extended the advantage. The Astros continued to pile on runs through a combination of hitting and defensive miscues by the Royals. A single by Jake Meyers scored one more run, and a subsequent passed ball by Royals catcher Salvador Perez allowed another run to cross the plate.
The momentum shifted decisively when Alvarez launched a 419-foot home run to center field in the bottom of the first inning. This grand slam accounted for four runs, making the score 9-0 in favor of Houston. The Royals attempted a comeback in the same inning, with Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr. contributing hits that brought the score to 9-5. Witt Jr. reached on an infield single in the eighth inning to make it 9-8, but the Astros held on for the victory.
Pitching Performance
Houston’s bullpen played a critical role in securing the win. Nate Pearson earned the victory after pitching two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out one batter. He was supported by Steven Okert, who threw 2.1 scoreless innings, and AJ Blubaugh, who recorded two strikeouts over two innings. Bryan King recorded his sixth save of the season by pitching 0.2 scoreless innings, and Josh Hader closed the game with a perfect inning, facing the minimum batter.
