Early Surge Defines Series Clincher

The Chicago White Sox secured their first playoff series victory since 2005 with a decisive 7-3 win over the Houston Astros in American League Wild Card Game 2 on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The visiting team capitalized on immediate offensive production and dominant pitching to sweep the best-of-three round, advancing while eliminating Houston from postseason contention.

Chicago’s offense exploded in the opening frame, putting together a four-run barrage that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Teel’s single to right field drove home Antonacci for the first run. The inning continued with Benintendi singling to center, allowing Teel to score and advancing Vargas to third.

Vargas crossed the plate on a throwing error by center fielder Spence, giving Chicago a 3-0 lead before Peters singled to bring Benintendi home.

Houston responded briefly when Peña homered to left-center field, cutting the deficit to 4-1. However, the White Sox maintained their momentum throughout the early innings, with Hunter Brown struggling to contain the Chicago lineup. Brown pitched 0.2 innings, surrendering five hits and three earned runs while striking out two batters before being lifted from the game.

Pitching Dominance in Relief

Anthony Kay earned the win for Chicago, pitching 0.7 innings with no hits allowed but one walk. He was supported by a stellar relief effort from Erick Fedde, who pitched 2.0 innings of hitless, run-free baseball while striking out three batters. Jordan Hicks also contributed significantly, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks or hits allowed.

On the Astros’ side, Peter Lambert pitched 3.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on zero hits but issuing two walks. Bryan Abreu worked 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and one earned run while striking out six batters. Josh Hader closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one strikeout.

Late Offensive Explosion

Houston managed to add another run in the fourth inning when Altuve homered to left field, making the score 4-3. The White Sox offense remained active, with Smith homering to left in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-2.

The game was effectively sealed in the sixth inning when Meidroth hit a home run to left field, driving in three runs. Acuña and Peters scored on the play, pushing the final margin to 7-3. This offensive outburst, combined with the earlier scoring, proved insurmountable for Houston.

Final Standings and Records

The victory improved Chicago’s record to 84-78, while Houston fell to 81-81. The White Sox completed their sweep of the series 2-0, marking a historic achievement for the franchise. The game was played at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas, with an attendance of 36,015 spectators.
