Turning the Tide in the Third Quarter
Conner Weigman’s explosive performance in the second half was the defining factor in Saturday’s clash at TDECU Stadium. The No. 20 Houston Cougars defeated the visiting UCF Knights 27-17, erasing a commanding 17-0 deficit to secure their fourth win of the season. While UCF established an early lead, the game shifted dramatically when Weigman took over the offense in the third quarter.
The Cougars (4-1) outscored the Knights (3-2) 27-10 after the break, a surge that proved decisive in the final result.
UCF Builds Early Lead
The Knights controlled the first two periods, building a substantial cushion before Houston’s offensive explosion. In the first quarter, Keyone Jenkins connected with Josh Derry on a 13-yard pass for a touchdown, giving UCF a 7-0 lead. Will Stone extended the advantage with a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter, putting the Knights up 10-0.
Jenkins capped the first-half dominance with a five-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, pushing the score to 17-0 and setting the stage for Houston’s comeback.
Houston’s Scoring Run
Houston’s response began immediately following Jenkins’ touchdown. Weigman broke through the UCF defense for a 19-yard rushing touchdown, followed swiftly by a one-yard run to cut the deficit to 17-14. The momentum carried into the fourth quarter, where Weigman added another one-yard rushing touchdown to put the Cougars ahead 21-17.
Jonathan Dimas sealed the victory with two field goals, first from 40 yards out and then from 46 yards, ensuring the final margin was 27-17. The attendance at TDECU Stadium was 25,593 for the contest.
Key Performances
Weigman was the engine of the Houston offense, completing 18 of 33 passes for 239 yards. On the ground, Re'Shaun Sanford II contributed 62 yards on 18 carries, while Patrick Overmyer led the receiving corps with 76 yards on six catches. For UCF, Keyone Jenkins threw for 253 yards on 23 of 35 attempts, accounting for one touchdown and one interception.
Duke Watson rushed for 50 yards on nine carries, and Josh Derry was the primary target, catching seven passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. The Cougars now look to maintain their momentum as the season progresses.
