Van Alstyne Independent School District (VAISD) is implementing new policies regarding the use of smart glasses and personal motorized vehicles on school campuses for the 2026-27 school year. The district states these measures are intended to maintain a safe, distraction-free environment and safeguard the privacy of students and staff.

Smart Glasses Policy

The updated visitor policy strictly prohibits smart glasses and wearable recording devices inside all school buildings during instructional hours. This rule applies to students, staff, and visitors. Devices capable of taking photos, recording audio, or filming video are included in this prohibition.

Individuals arriving on campus wearing smart glasses will be asked by the front office to power off and store their device before entering the building. Visitors who do not comply will be asked to remain in the office. The policy permits the use of smart glasses at public after-school events, including athletic games and performances.

Individuals requiring specialized wearable technology for documented medical or vision accessibility reasons must notify campus administration before their visit.

Personal Motorized Devices

The district has also established safety protocols for electric bicycles, electric scooters, hoverboards, OneWheels, and other personal motorized transportation devices. While students may ride these devices to and from school, they must dismount and walk them once they cross onto school property. This requirement extends to campus sidewalks, parking lots, crosswalks, and entryways.

All devices must be stored at designated campus bike racks during the day. Students are responsible for providing their own locks. VAISD is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property. The policy does not apply to motorized wheelchairs or documented assistive mobility devices used by individuals with disabilities.

Enforcement

A first violation of the motorized device policy will result in an official warning and a review of the policy. Subsequent violations will result in the confiscation of the device. A parent or guardian must pick up the confiscated device in person from the front office during standard operating hours. Students may also face further disciplinary action per the Student Code of Conduct.

Residents can review the full PDF versions of these policies by clicking the links provided in the original announcement. Questions regarding these policies should be directed to campus administration.
