Budget and Tax Rate Approval

The Van Alstyne ISD Board of Trustees voted 7-0 to approve the district’s 2026-27 budget and tax rate during its regular meeting on Monday night. The approved total tax rate is set at $1.1687 per $100 of property valuation, which includes a Maintenance and Operations rate of $0.6687 and an Interest and Sinking rate of $0.50.

District administration noted that the budget includes a projected deficit as the district manages financial impacts from rapid growth and the opening of an additional elementary campus. Officials explained that new school openings create significant one-time expenses while existing enrollment is spread across more campuses.

The district has maintained its fund balance to prepare for such periods until new facilities fill and enrollment catches up with capacity.

Leaders discussed state funding and enrollment trends, noting that growth has not occurred at the pace previously projected, though recent numbers show improvement. Administration expressed optimism that continued enrollment growth could help return the district to a balanced budget. The approved budget does not include reductions to student programs or staff services.

Recognitions and Policy Updates

The board also recognized former trustees Randall Morgan and Debbie Nance for concluding 15 years of service on the board. Nance’s tenure followed 30 years as a teacher in the district, marking a combined 45 years of service. Former Chief of Police Jeff Burge was also recognized for establishing the first police department in Van Alstyne ISD and supporting student safety.

Additionally, the board approved the 2026-27 student handbooks by a 6-1 vote. The Athletic Code of Conduct now reduces the competition suspension for DWI/DUI offenses from one year to two weeks. Other consequences remain in place, including drug testing, loss of campus driving privileges, participation in awareness programs, and additional conditioning requirements.

Trustees received updates on the Gifted and Talented program, staffing, exit survey results, and the Communications and Community Engagement Plan.
