GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas — Two Grayson County school groups are turning Fourth of July fireworks sales into support for students and teachers this week, with stands in Sherman and Tom Bean raising money for band expenses and classroom grants.
The Sherman High School Band has partnered with Bellinmo Fireworks for around 10 years, KXII reported. Student volunteers and parents staff the stand in exchange for a share of the proceeds.
"We help staff some of the workers, people that work on the floor, the cash register, whatever place we can, and we get a portion of the proceeds and that helps our kids band fees and the band as a whole," Sherman band supporter Mitch Wiggains said.
Wiggains said the money supports band fees, props, costumes, sound equipment and instrument repair. He also said the work gives students a chance to greet customers, show them fireworks and practice conversation during the holiday season. The Sherman stand is open through Saturday, July 4, off US 82 in Sherman.
Across the county, the Tom Bean Education Foundation is running a fireworks stand for the second year to benefit teachers and staff. Volunteer Bert Townsend said the effort is meant to help educators cover needs that may fall outside a district budget.
