Baylor University's football defense is preparing for notable changes with the appointment of Joe Klanderman as the new defensive coordinator. Klanderman, who previously led a top 30 ranked defense at Kansas State, steps in as the Bears look to improve after allowing an average of 30.8 points and over 399.9 yards per game since 2023.
Under Klanderman's guidance, the team will adopt a 3-3-5 defensive formation that emphasizes versatility and aims to challenge opposing quarterbacks. This strategy includes three defensive linemen to absorb blocks, allowing linebackers to pursue the ball more effectively. Klanderman's approach is expected to bolster Baylor's performance in critical situations, particularly in red-zone defense and third-down stops, areas where his previous defenses excelled.
The defensive line has seen significant changes, with new players such as Indiana transfer Hosea Wheeler joining returning members Garrick Ponder, Jordan Mack, and Jamaal Whyce Jr. The secondary will also benefit from a mix of experienced players and new transfers, including LeVar Thorton and Jacob Redding, to limit explosive plays.
