As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their upcoming preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, significant roster evaluations are underway. The competition for the backup quarterback position has intensified with Dak Prescott and most starters resting. Sam Howell, who started the first exhibition game against Seattle, and Joe Milton, who played in the second half, are both in contention for the QB2 role.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer noted Howell's consistent practice performance as a factor in his starting position, while Milton showed promise during his time on the field.

Concerns have been raised about right tackle Terence Steele, who may be seen as a vulnerability on the starting offensive line. Coach Schottenheimer pointed out the necessity for Steele to enhance his consistency following his outing against the Los Angeles Rams. Offensive coordinator Clayton Adams stressed the need to find support for Steele as he continues in his seventh professional season.

In the running back department, Jaydon Blue, a former University of Texas player, is currently dealing with a shoulder injury, which puts his availability for the next game in doubt. Blue had been in a competitive race for the backup spot with Phil Mafah and Malik Davis behind Javonte Williams but faced challenges in the initial preseason game.

Additionally, safety Jalen Thompson gained attention after a notable moment during joint practices with the New Orleans Saints, where he was slammed to the ground by a Saints player. As a starter, Thompson is not expected to participate in the preseason games, making this incident a rare interaction with players from another team.

Further updates on the Cowboys' roster decisions and player statuses are anticipated as the team readies for their matchup against the Cardinals.
