Tommy Castellanos has scored three touchdowns in two games for Texas Tech, but the veteran quarterback’s role remains unsettled. Coach Joey McGuire said Will Hammond is still the Red Raiders’ starter and that the team will continue creating packages for Castellanos.
Castellanos’ opportunities have included work near the goal line. He scored on a 3-yard run against Houston last Friday after returning to the game in the red zone. Earlier in that game, he threw an interception on the opening play while trying to throw the ball out of bounds, according to Red Raiders Wire.
Texas Tech added Castellanos late in preseason camp as an emergency backup after the transfer portal closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation concluded. Hammond is recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report. Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ role among 10 questions that could shape the college football season.
His future usage, including whether he continues appearing near the goal line, has not been determined.
