The Dallas Cowboys have made significant roster adjustments, particularly at the running back position, leading to the release of Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, both drafted in 2025. The team has decided to retain running backs Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. Coach Brian Schottenheimer noted the difficulty of these decisions, recognizing the potential both Blue and Mafah brought to the team.

In an effort to enhance their roster, the Cowboys have claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer pointed out Demercado's versatility and special teams contributions as crucial factors in this acquisition, alongside offensive coordinator Klayton Adams' familiarity with him from their time in Arizona.

While there is speculation about the possibility of Blue or Mafah returning to the practice squad, Schottenheimer stated there are no guarantees. The Cowboys have already signed 13 players to their practice squad, including running back Israel Abanikanda.

With a maximum of 16 players allowed on the practice squad and an exemption for an additional player due to the International Player Pathway program, the team is focused on building a competitive roster that reflects their philosophy of daily competition.
