The Dallas Cowboys announced the release of quarterback Joe Milton on Monday. Milton, who joined the team in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots, had been competing for the backup quarterback position against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.
The decision to waive Milton came after the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which required a roster adjustment. During the 2026 preseason, Milton appeared in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had previously expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as potential backup quarterbacks. Milton had noted his growing comfort with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and a second training camp, emphasizing the importance of mastering the playbook.
With Milton's departure, the Cowboys' quarterback lineup now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. Milton is subject to waivers and may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad if he goes unclaimed.
