The Houston Texans have reported encouraging developments regarding wide receiver Tank Dell's recovery from a severe knee injury. General manager Nick Caserio stated that the team is not hurrying his return.
Currently on Reserve/Injured with a designation to return, Dell is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of four games during the regular season as he heals from a dislocated kneecap and multiple ligament tears sustained in December 2024.
Caserio mentioned that Dell is closer to a return than he was earlier in training camp, but he must still regain his top-end speed, which is essential for his playing style. While Dell has demonstrated improvements in his quickness and route-running, the Texans are focused on ensuring he can perform at the high speeds necessary for success in the NFL.
Dell's injury kept him out for the entire 2025 season, requiring extensive rehabilitation. Caserio emphasized that being “close” to returning does not mean Dell is ready for game action, and the team's priority is his complete recovery. Before his injury, Dell had become a significant asset for quarterback C.J. Stroud, achieving 98 receptions for 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns over his first two seasons.
In Dell's absence, other receivers like Boutte and Noel will have the chance to step in and develop their connection with Stroud. This situation will also help the Texans evaluate their offensive needs as they move forward, with the focus on Dell regaining his explosive speed rather than a specific return timeline.
