WACO, Texas — DJ Lagway, a quarterback who encountered significant hurdles during his tenure at the University of Florida, is starting anew at Baylor University. His previous season was marred by a tough performance against LSU, where he threw five interceptions, leading to a decline in his mental health. This situation prompted his mother, Nikita, to come to his aid.
Upon her arrival, Lagway was emotionally distressed, sharing feelings of abandonment. Nikita offered reassurance, telling him, "God's got you," but Lagway felt lost, expressing, "I think God forgot about me." After a challenging 2025 season filled with injuries and mistakes, he made the decision to transfer back to Texas, where he has family connections and a history with Baylor.
In Waco, Lagway is reconnecting with head coach Dave Aranda, who acknowledged the emotional struggles he faced. During a heartfelt discussion, Lagway shared his frustrations regarding his time in Gainesville, which marked a pivotal moment in his mental recovery. Lagway describes his life in Waco as "slower" and is grateful for the change.
He is preparing to open the season with Baylor against Auburn, as he looks to leave behind past challenges and demonstrate his potential on the field with the Bears.
