Sam Erger, the head volleyball coach at Southern Methodist University, has been handed a two-game suspension due to a violation regarding impermissible communication, as stated by a university spokesperson. This suspension was self-imposed by SMU Athletics and occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured wins against Colorado State and UC Davis. Notably, sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis achieved her first double-double, recording 22 kills and 14 digs against Colorado State. Erger returned to coaching on September 2, when the Mustangs faced TCU and suffered a loss in five sets.
In that match, Davis again stood out with 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija impressed with 13 kills.
Erger has been leading the SMU volleyball program since February 2022, guiding the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, which includes a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. Last season, the Mustangs tied the program record with 27 wins. The team is preparing to compete against the University of San Diego, with the upcoming match set to be streamed on ESPN+.
