The Houston Texans have declared that contract discussions with quarterback C.J. Stroud will cease once the regular season commences. General manager Nick Caserio indicated that if an agreement is not finalized prior to the team's opening game against Buffalo on September 13, talks will be deferred until the following offseason.
Stroud, who was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option activated, ensuring his contract with the team remains valid through 2027. Although Caserio previously suggested that an extension could be possible before the season, no deal has materialized as of now.
At 24 years old, Stroud holds a career record of 28 wins and 18 losses, and he has guided the Texans to playoff appearances in all three of his initial seasons.
He was honored as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and recorded a personal best completion percentage of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 season and a spot in the divisional playoffs. Nonetheless, Stroud encountered difficulties during the playoffs, particularly with five interceptions in a 28-16 defeat against New England. Additional information regarding future negotiations has yet to be revealed.
