DeGrom’s Dominance Amidst Offensive Chaos

Jacob deGrom delivered a masterclass in strikeout ability on his 38th birthday, fanning nine batters while pitching six innings of work. Despite allowing six earned runs, his performance was the anchor for the Texas Rangers, who secured a 9-7 victory over the San Diego Padres at Globe Life Field. DeGrom (6-4) earned the win, showcasing his ability to miss bats even when the ball was not staying in the park.

The game was defined by a chaotic first inning that set the tone for a wild offensive showcase. The Padres struck first when Sheets singled to right, bringing Tatis Jr. home and leaving Taylor at third. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when France launched a three-run homer to right field (363 feet), scoring Taylor, Sheets, and Bogaerts to give Texas a 5-0 lead.

First-Inning Rollercoaster

San Diego quickly answered, chipping away at the deficit. Nimmo doubled to center to score Pederson, making it 5-1. Osuna followed with a double to right, driving in Jung and Nimmo to bring the score to 5-3. Burger then doubled to left, scoring Duran and Osuna to tie the game at 5-5. The inning concluded with Díaz reaching on an infield single to third, allowing Burger to score and giving the Padres a 6-5 advantage heading into the second inning.

The Rangers retook control in the fourth. France homered to center field (409 feet) to tie the game at 6-6. Langford then doubled to center, scoring Jung, though he was thrown out at third. Duran added another run in the sixth with a single to center, scoring Jung again to put Texas ahead 8-6.

Late Home Runs Decide Outcome

The Padres refused to go quietly. Sheets homered to right field (391 feet) in the eighth inning to make it 8-7. Langford immediately responded with a home run to left center (430 feet), extending the Rangers' lead to 9-7. This final blow proved sufficient as the Rangers held on for the win.

Pitching Relief and Final Stats

DeGrom received support from the Texas bullpen. Jakob Junis pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one run, and took the hold. Jacob Latz closed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his 13th save.

San Diego’s pitching staff struggled with consistency. Randy Vasquez (6-5) took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Yuki Matsui contributed 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. David Morgan allowed one run in 0.1 innings, while Wandy Peralta and Jason Adam each pitched 1.2 and 1.0 innings respectively, with Adam allowing the final run.

The Rangers improved to 36-39, while the Padres fell to 38-36. The game drew an attendance of 33,406 fans to Arlington.
