Matt Townsend, who taught English and coached at Van Alstyne before going on to lead athletics at Texoma Christian School in Sherman, died Sept. 29. He was 45.

A Sherman native and S&S High School graduate, Townsend spent his career teaching and coaching across the area, at S&S, Van Alstyne, Bonham and Frisco, and taught English at Grayson College for many years, according to his obituary from Waldo Funeral Home. His family wrote that he saw his students and players as his ministry.

He is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, his sister and his grandmother.
