A University of Virginia sociologist who studies the Black intellectual tradition and the classics will deliver a free public lecture in Sherman on Wednesday.

Angel Parham will give Austin College's annual A.J. Carlson Lecture on the Liberal Arts, titled "A Liberal Education for Life, Liberty, and Happiness: Black Intellectuals and Founding Ideals," on Wednesday, Oct. 7, according to the college. A reception begins at 4:30 p.m. and the talk starts at 5 p.m. in Mabee Hall inside the Wright Campus Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

Austin College is in Sherman, north of Van Alstyne.

Who is speaking

Parham is an associate professor of sociology and a senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, the college said. She holds a bachelor's degree from Yale University and did her doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Her research focuses on the historical sociology of race. Her 2017 book from Oxford, "American Routes: Racial Palimpsests and the Transformation of Race," shared two awards the following year: the Social Science History Association's Allan Sharlin Memorial book award and the American Sociological Association's Barrington Moore award in comparative-historical sociology.

She also writes about where the Black intellectual tradition meets classical literature. With Anika Prather, she co-wrote "The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature," published in 2022, and she founded Nyansa Classical Community, a nonprofit that develops classical curricula and programs for students from varied backgrounds.

Parham has been a member of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and has received a Fulbright grant, according to the college.

About the lecture series

The series honors A.J. "Jack" Carlson, who joined the Austin College history faculty in 1962. A scholar of early modern European history, Carlson went on to become dean of humanities, and the college describes him as one of its strongest advocates for liberal arts education through years of financial pressure on the school.

Austin College, founded in 1849, enrolls about 1,300 residential students.
