A new seafood restaurant is headed for the old Senior Center building in Van Alstyne, according to a staff update prepared for the city's Community Development Corporation board, which meets Thursday, Oct. 8.

The one-page development and business update in the board's packet lists several projects in motion:

  • Seafood restaurant: going into the former Senior Center building. The report does not name the restaurant or give an opening date.
  • Burnt: the business will start on an expansion soon.
  • Big D Lumber: still slated to open by March 2027.
  • Kirby Smith: has been operating since early September and will announce a ribbon cutting date soon.

The Economic Development Corporation board, which meets the same evening, has a nearly identical update in its packet, without the restaurant and expansion items. Both meetings are set for 6 p.m. at City Hall, 152 N. Main Drive.

New members, new officers

Each board will seat new members and elect a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, since officers serve one-year terms under the bylaws. The EDC agenda welcomes Kerri Cook, Ryan Shafer, Amanda Hofer and Tyler Hall. The CDC agenda welcomes Karen Favors, John Snook and Nicole Walls.

Both boards also need a new November meeting date because city staff will be at the Texas Municipal League annual conference that week. The options offered are Nov. 4 or Nov. 18.

Behind closed doors

Each agenda includes an executive session on a real estate contract for land in the Cold Springs Industrial Park and on economic development talks for a prospect called Project Smiley. The EDC will also discuss a real estate contract with APS. The CDC will discuss its request for qualifications for a downtown property it owns.

That downtown site is the former Diamond's and FBC property. Minutes from the CDC's Sept. 10 meeting show the board heard a presentation from The Lanterra Group LLC on its response to the request and took no action.

At the same meeting, the CDC voted 4-2 to give the city $5,000 for downtown Christmas activities, with board members Lisa Simonian and Joshua Sweet opposed, and approved an updated grants program.
