Tug of war, train rides and free hot dogs on tap for Van Alstyne's National Night Out Tuesday

Van Alstyne's police and fire departments will square off at the end of a rope Tuesday night as part of the city's National Night Out.

The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to the city's VA Insider newsletter. Plans include bounce houses, train rides, free hot dogs and watermelon, raffle prizes and a tug of war pitting the Police Department against the Fire Department.

The city's newsletter did not list a site for this year's gathering. The Van Alstyne Police Department's non-emergency line is 903-482-5251, and the department is at 242 N. Preston Ave.

  • Library Board, Tuesday, Oct. 6, 5:30 p.m.: The board meets at the Van Alstyne Public Library, 151 W. Cooper St., to welcome new members, elect officers and hear a grants update from the library director. Its agenda also lists volunteer needs for Downtown Trick or Treat, set for 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, and a Partin Elementary family STEM night on Friday, Nov. 13.
  • Senior Center fishing trip, Friday, Oct. 16: Seniors can sign up at the senior center; the cutoff is Friday, Oct. 9.

The library board meeting is open to the public, and speakers who want to address the board must turn in a public comment form before the call to order, according to the agenda.
