Van Alstyne ISD earned an A, or Superior Achievement, in this year's state review of school district finances, and trustees will take public comment on the result Monday.
The Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, known as FIRST, grades districts on 21 measures drawn from their audited financial reports. The 2025-26 ratings, published by the Texas Education Agency in August, are based on 2024-25 data. Van Alstyne scored 92 points out of 100. Districts need 90 or more for an A, and 70 is the minimum passing score.
The district passed every pass-fail test, including on-time filing of its annual financial report, a clean audit opinion and timely payments to the teacher retirement system and other agencies. It also received full points on cash on hand, short-term debt coverage, budgeting accuracy and long-term solvency.
The only measure where Van Alstyne gave up points compares a district's future debt payments with the assessed value of property in the district. It earned 2 of the 10 possible points there, which accounts for the full 8-point gap between its score and a perfect 100.
How it compares
Other Grayson County districts posted A ratings as well. Howe ISD scored a perfect 100, Denison ISD 98, Sherman ISD 94 and Gunter ISD 92, according to the agency's ratings database.
