The Melissa Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting involving one of its officers that occurred in the early hours of June 21, 2026. The incident took place in the 2600 block of East Melissa Road, where Melissa is located approximately 9 miles south of Van Alstyne.

According to a news release issued by the department, officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence in that area around 11:30 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers made contact with individuals at the home. The release states that during this encounter, officers faced a situation involving an armed person and another occupant.

During the encounter, an officer discharged his firearm. The individual who was armed sustained gunshot wounds. Responding officers provided medical aid at the scene before the suspect was transported to a local hospital. The suspect later died from those injuries. In line with standard department policy, the officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed. The Melissa Police Department stated that the Texas Rangers have taken over the criminal investigation into the shooting.

The department also noted that it will conduct a separate administrative review of the incident. The Melissa Police Department thanked the Anna Police Department, the Princeton Police Department, and the Collin County Sheriff's Office for their assistance and support during the incident.
