A young girl has died after being hit by a car in Melissa, a community in Collin County. The incident occurred on Wednesday in the city.

Melissa is situated approximately 9 miles south of Van Alstyne.

Details regarding the specific circumstances of the crash, the identity of the victim, or the condition of the driver remain unclear. Authorities have not yet released further information about the investigation.

This event marks a separate incident from other recent occurrences in the area. Earlier in the week, two elementary school students in the Melissa Independent School District were struck by a vehicle while traveling to school on Monday morning. Additionally, residents in Melissa were evacuated on Tuesday afternoon after construction crews damaged a gas main.

The Melissa Independent School District also addressed personnel matters, firing an employee following an investigation by the district's police department into inappropriate electronic communication with a student. Meanwhile, local high schools in Celina and Melissa prepared for their 2020 football season opener on Friday night.

In other regional news, an escaped Alabama inmate was captured after stopping at a Buc-ee's in Melissa. The individual had traveled more than 600 miles before being spotted by license plate-identifying cameras. Prosper police also arrested two individuals in connection with an illegal prostitution operation allegedly run from a local massage business.

On a different note, a city in Collin County was named the fastest-growing in the United States, with five North Texas cities ranking among the fastest-growing in the country. Additionally, high school students from several North Texas cities walked out of class to protest immigration enforcement, despite warnings from Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Education Agency.
