Jade Caballero, a recent graduate of Sherman High School, has secured a paid position at the law firm where she completed a senior-year internship. She will also attend Austin College in the fall on a scholarship. Caballero is the first student from Sherman High to move from the school-sponsored internship class into an official role at the firm.

Sherman is about 15 miles north of Van Alstyne.

During her senior year, Caballero spent two hours a day, four days a week working in the community as part of a criminal law class taught by Michele Watson. The program placed students with local law enforcement or attorneys. Caballero chose the law firm, where she worked under Linzie Roesler, who served as her mentor and is now her employer.

Roesler described Caballero as intelligent and noted that her work ethic was exceptional for her age. Roesler stated she intends to teach Caballero how to succeed as an attorney and as a woman in the legal field. Caballero said she values the trust Roesler has placed in her and appreciates being treated with maturity.

Watson, the teacher, said landing a paid position at age 17 or 18 is rare. She described Caballero as self-disciplined and motivated, predicting she would excel in her future endeavors. Caballero attributed her drive to her parents, who worked long hours as a nurse and a doctor. She said she wants to make them proud.

A particularly busy day at the firm confirmed her career choice for Caballero. She described the experience as hectic but ultimately fulfilling, stating she felt made for the work. Roesler added that Caballero is more mature than she was at that age and will compete with the best in the field.

Both mentors offered advice as Caballero prepares for her next steps. Watson urged her to maintain her integrity and ethics. Roesler advised her to never give up and to develop resilience. Caballero said she is prepared for challenges and will remind herself to keep going when things become difficult.
