A Texoma entrepreneur is pursuing municipal authorization to establish a poker lounge in the heart of Sherman. Bill Hollomon, a career salesman and co-owner of The Railyard Taproom, recently outlined his proposal to city leaders. He stated that the concept has garnered strong backing from local officials.
Hollomon, who has played poker for many years, argued that the proposed venue would address a gap in the market for Grayson County. He described the reception to his plans as largely positive, noting that support for the project has been nearly unanimous among those he has consulted.
While Texas statutes generally prohibit gambling and casino-style operations, Hollomon pointed to specific state exceptions that allow poker lounges to function legally. He emphasized that his business model adheres to three strict conditions: ensuring equal winning odds for all participants, maintaining status as a private club, and refraining from taking a rake or commission from the pot.
According to Hollomon, every dollar wagered by patrons would be returned to the players, with the house retaining none of the funds. This structure is intended to distinguish the operation from illegal gambling enterprises.
The proposed venue, named Showdown Social Club, would feature a western aesthetic described as modern yet rustic. The facility plans to include between 20 and 30 tables, capable of hosting several hundred players simultaneously. Operating hours would extend from noon until 2:00 a.m.
Hollomon expressed confidence that the lounge would complement Sherman’s growing reputation as a tech hub. He described the downtown square as a high-energy area and suggested the club would add to that vibrancy. The business aims to open by the end of the year, pending final city approval.
