Retired Air Force veterans Mark and Nancy Thomson marked the United States' 250th anniversary by bringing historical figures to life at a First United Bank location in Sherman. The couple used the occasion to highlight the nation's founding and the importance of civic unity as the Fourth of July approaches.
Mark Thomson, dressed as Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, spoke to the crowd about the difficulties delegates encountered in the 1700s. He explained the challenges of declaring independence from Great Britain and the effort required to unite the thirteen colonies. Thomson emphasized that patriotism serves as a vital force for keeping the country together.
Nancy Thomson appeared in costume as Betsy Ross, the upholsterer and flag-maker associated with the creation of the first American flag. She discussed the origins of the nation's symbol of unity and argued that American pride sets a positive example for other countries. She noted that many visitors to the United States are impressed by the American way of life.
The couple expressed that understanding the nation's origins is crucial for appreciating the freedoms maintained today. They pointed to the progress made over centuries and the courage of leaders who sought independence as key elements of American history. Thomson described the forefathers who signed the Declaration as impressive figures whose lessons remain relevant.
Sherman is located approximately 15 miles north of Van Alstyne. The event took place at the bank branch in Sherman, Texas, as part of the broader community celebrations for America's 250th birthday.
