University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks is facing two criminal charges, including an allegation involving the assault of a pregnant person. He appeared in court Monday, where Nariah Harley asked the judge to have prosecutors dismiss that case. Harley said police misunderstood what happened and that she does not consider herself a victim.
Harley said an argument occurred inside Brooks’ apartment last week. She said Brooks repeatedly told her to leave, then lifted her and put her outside when she refused. Brooks contacted police because she would not leave, Harley said. She identified Brooks as the father of her baby and asked for all charges to be dropped so they could move forward.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body cameras recorded the encounter. Prosecutors plan to review that footage and a 911 call Brooks made, he said. The other case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County, in which Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle involving another woman and her sister.
Family members said they and Brooks grew up together in Killeen and attended high school together. Harley also is from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said Brooks remains suspended from the football team while the cases continue and hopes he can attend classes.
