Malik Davis has been ruled out of the Dallas Cowboys’ season-opening game against the New York Giants because of a hip injury. He was carted off the field after being hurt at Friday’s practice, and the team planned further evaluations to determine the severity.
ESPN’s Todd Archer reported Davis would not face New York, while Jeremy Fowler later cited a source describing the injury as “bad” and said Dallas was preparing for an extended absence. The length of the setback remains unknown.
Davis had gained a place in the Cowboys’ backfield plans after carrying 12 times for 68 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per attempt, and scoring a receiving touchdown during the preseason. Javonte Williams is expected to continue as the primary running back. In 16 starts during the 2025 season, Williams ran for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns on 252 carries.
He also recorded 35 catches for 137 yards and two receiving scores.
Emari Demercado may take on additional work. Dallas claimed him from Kansas City’s waivers on Sept. 1. He played his first three seasons with Arizona, producing 819 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries, plus 50 receptions for 324 yards and one receiving touchdown.
