Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will be out for at least four weeks due to thumb surgery. In his place, T.J. Bass will take over, with Schottenheimer expressing confidence in Bass's capabilities.
Owner Jerry Jones hinted at the possibility of making a trade to strengthen the defense, noting on his radio show that recent contract restructures have provided the necessary cap space. He stated, "We're in play," regarding potential trades, emphasizing a focus on enhancing the defensive lineup.
Last week, the Cowboys restructured contracts for several players, including defensive tackle Kenny Clark and cornerback DaRon Bland, resulting in $19 million in available salary-cap room. These changes are seen as bookkeeping adjustments that enhance future financial flexibility without affecting current player salaries.
Jones mentioned that the Cowboys could exceed $33 million in cap space for the 2026 season, which could facilitate trades before the mid-season deadline. He indicated readiness to use high draft picks to acquire players who could significantly contribute right away, stating, "A top pick is expendable this year for me to add to somebody that meaningfully would help us now."
