Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis has been fined $6,735 for an infraction of unnecessary roughness that occurred during a preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. This incident took place in the first quarter at the 12:07 mark, following a five-yard gain. Although no penalty was called during the game, the NFL later imposed the fine as part of its routine procedure for preseason violations.
Davis is the only player from the Cowboys to receive a fine during the preseason. The highest fine issued in the league during this time was to Tytus Howard, an offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns, who faced a penalty of $12,537 for a comparable offense earlier in the preseason.
Currently, Davis is in the second year of a two-year contract worth $2.1 million, which includes a base salary of $1.1 million for 2026. This fine amounts to roughly 0.6% of his salary. The NFL donates all fines to the Professional Athletes Foundation, which aids athletes in need and promotes health and safety initiatives.
In terms of his position on the team, Davis competed for the backup running back role against Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Despite expectations that Blue would secure a spot, he was released along with Mafah, allowing Davis to assume the backup position behind starting running back Javonte Williams.
After finalizing the roster, the Cowboys added Emari Demercado from waivers for additional depth at running back. Coach Brian Schottenheimer has praised Davis's contributions and work ethic, highlighting his importance to the team’s competitive atmosphere.
