The Houston Texans have brought George Odum up from the practice squad for their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, marking the veteran’s second elevation this season. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported Sept. 19 that Houston was bringing him back.
Odum has spent nine NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers, earning one All-Pro honor with each team. His career statistics have been reported in two ways: one listing shows 205 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, while another gives him 209 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The latter listing also credits him with 12 starts in 109 games.
Against Buffalo, Odum took part in 71% of Houston’s special teams plays and made a tackle in a 36-31 Texans loss. Caleb Bullock and Reed Blankenship are healthy, but Houston is using Odum for special teams. Coach DeMeco Ryans has previously praised his preseason playmaking.
Pro Football Focus placed him 26th among 29 Houston special teams players for that game, while noting its overall grade does not reflect performance in every phase. Since this is Odum’s second elevation, Houston can use one more. The Texans are scheduled to play Indianapolis in Week 3, after which they would have to place him on the 53-man roster or choose another option.
