TCU Athletics has restored media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, concluding a dispute that arose after the newspaper reported on a locker room incident involving the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields. The university announced the resolution on September 4, highlighting that constructive discussions led to the reinstatement of access.
The conflict began following a report by Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson on August 18, which detailed tensions in the locker room and alleged that coaches failed to address the situation. The report indicated that head coach Sonny Dykes was unaware of the severity of the issues among players.
TCU officials stated that the credential revocation was related to threats made against sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who was punched by Fields.
The incident occurred on August 13, when Ezukanma claimed in an Instagram video that Fields punched him, resulting in a head injury. A TCU football staff member reported the incident to campus police, leading to Fields' dismissal from the team and subsequent arrest on charges of aggravated assault.
Fields turned himself in to Tarrant County police on August 30 and was released after posting a $50,000 bond. During the credential revocation, Johnson covered TCU's season opener from the stands in Dublin, Ireland.
