Texas Christian University has restored media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a dispute that arose after the newspaper reported on a locker room altercation involving Jacob Fields, a former safety for TCU, and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma.
The incident occurred on August 13 and resulted in Fields' dismissal from the team and his arrest for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Ezukanma reportedly sustained severe injuries, including a brain bleed and concussion, requiring a three-day hospitalization.
TCU indicated that both sides engaged in "productive discussions" and agreed to move forward. The initial decision to revoke the Star-Telegram's credentials had garnered attention, particularly as more serious details about the incident became known. The newspaper had previously cited an unnamed source suggesting that Fields was targeted by teammates, which was subsequently amended to eliminate any implications of bullying.
Athletic director Mike Buddie voiced concerns that the reporting had fostered a harmful narrative, leading to threats against Fields and his family.
After the revocation, the Star-Telegram was restricted from covering TCU athletic events, which included the season opener against North Carolina in Dublin. Despite this, a reporter from the newspaper managed to cover the game without official credentials.
