Turning Point in the Third Quarter
The decisive moment of the contest arrived in the third quarter when TCU Horned Frogs defensive back Max Carroll returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown. This play, coupled with the subsequent kick by Kyle Lemmermann, erased Kansas's lead and gave TCU a 14-13 advantage.
Prior to this shift, the Jayhawks had built a substantial cushion, but the Horned Frogs responded immediately to take control of the game's flow.
Scoring Sequence and Momentum Shifts
Kansas opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal by Martin Connington in the first quarter. The Jayhawks extended their lead in the second quarter when Connington added a 42-yard field goal. Later in that period, Kansas quarterback Cole Ballard connected with Cam Pickett on a 29-yard pass, followed by a successful kick, to make it 13-0.
TCU remained scoreless through the first half, but the third-quarter explosion changed the narrative. After Carroll's pick-six, TCU running back Ace Theus added a 28-yard rushing touchdown, also followed by a Lemmermann kick, to pull TCU ahead 14-13. In the fourth quarter, Connington narrowed the gap with a 27-yard field goal, putting Kansas back within two points at 16-14.
