Will Hammond’s return to the field served as the catalyst for Texas Tech, as the Red Raiders utilized a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Abilene Christian Wildcats 33-10 on Saturday. The decisive play came in the fourth quarter, but the foundation was laid early when the home team established a commanding lead.
Hammond, playing in his first game back from injury, connected with Malcolm Simmons for a 64-yard touchdown pass that capped a strong offensive sequence. This performance helped secure the win for the Red Raiders, who finished the day with a 1-0 record. The Wildcats dropped to 0-2 on the season after the loss at Galaxy Stadium.
Early Dominance
Texas Tech struck quickly in the first period, building a 14-0 advantage before the Wildcats could mount a response. Quinten Joyner opened the scoring with a 14-yard rushing touchdown, followed by J’Koby Williams adding a 5-yard run on the next drive. Both scores were converted by Stone Harrington.
The Red Raiders extended their lead in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal by Harrington. Abilene Christian managed to find the end zone in the fourth quarter, but their earlier efforts were limited to a 41-yard field goal by Brandon Perez in the second quarter, which briefly narrowed the gap to 17-3.
