Turning Point in the Eighth
The Houston Astros seized control of their Saturday contest at Comerica Park with a decisive two-run rally in the eighth inning, ultimately defeating the Detroit Tigers 8-6. The shift in momentum arrived when Alex Bregman’s teammate, Paredes, doubled to right field. That single hit was enough to drive in both Peña and Vázquez, who had reached base earlier in the frame, turning a tied game into a Houston lead that the Tigers could not overcome.
Early Lead and Detroit Surge
Houston jumped out to an early advantage in the second inning. Smith connected on a home run to left field, measuring 380 feet, which scored Walker and gave the Astros a 2-0 lead. The Tigers responded in the third inning with a four-run explosion. Carpenter launched a home run to right-center field (390 feet), bringing in McGonigle, Keith, and Torkelson to erase the deficit and take a 4-3 lead.
Detroit extended its advantage later in the third inning. Peña singled to center field, scoring Diaz, and the Tigers held a 4-3 lead after that play before the Astros tied it up. In the fourth inning, the Astros tied the game at 4-4 when Peña singled to center, scoring Diaz. Shortly after, Torkelson doubled to left, scoring Rogers, putting Detroit back ahead 5-4. Lee then homered to left-center (369 feet) in the fifth, extending the Tigers’ lead to 6-4.
Astros Fight Back
Houston chipped away at the lead in the seventh inning. Walker singled to left field, scoring Paredes, making the score 6-5. The game remained tight until the eighth inning, where Peña singled to center again. Diaz scored on a fielding error by center fielder Outman, tying the game at 6-6. Vázquez reached second and third on the play, setting the stage for Paredes’s game-winning double.
