The Deciding Moment
The Houston Astros escaped a tie to defeat the Seattle Mariners 10-7 on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Daikin Park. The game’s decisive moment arrived in the bottom of the 10th inning, when Yordan Walker drove in three runs with a 405-foot home run to left field. That blast capped a five-run rally that erased a two-run deficit and secured the win for Houston.
Early Scoring Exchange
The Mariners took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Luis Rengifo singled to right, allowing Luis Rengifo to score, though the play description indicates Arozarena scored. The score remained 2-0 Seattle after a sacrifice fly by Naylor.
Houston responded in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to right field by Alvarez, who hit the ball 368 feet. The game was tied 2-2 after the first inning.
In the second inning, the Astros took control. Smith tripled to left, scoring Walker. Peña followed with a single to right, bringing in Smith.
Paredes then reached on an infield single, scoring Peña and Vázquez. This sequence gave Houston a 5-2 lead. The Mariners chipped away at the deficit in the sixth and eighth innings, with Naylor scoring on a Robles single and Rodríguez scoring on a Donovan groundout.
By the end of the eighth, the score was 5-5.
