A man and a woman in their 60s were killed when a house exploded early Monday morning in the Van Alstyne area. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in the 700 block of Stone Marshell Road, located northeast of the town.
Grayson County Fire Marshal officials stated that the blast appears to be accidental and is being investigated as a possible propane leak. The residence utilized propane for its appliances, and investigators believe a leak inside the structure triggered the explosion. The Grayson County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Texas Railroad Commission are leading the inquiry.
Neighbors reported feeling the force of the blast. Kim Martin, who lives across the street from the property, described the event as sounding like a bomb that created a crater in the ground and scattered debris toward nearby homes. She noted that the shockwave shook the area and prompted residents to run outside.
Martin said she and her husband attempted to locate the homeowners inside the damaged structure after the initial blast. Her husband reported being unable to find them before they retreated due to reports of ammunition discharging from the property.
The identities of the two deceased individuals have not been released by officials. Martin described the couple as helpful neighbors who were part of a group of residents in similar age brackets who frequently gathered for meals. She mentioned that she had not seen them the previous day because they were visiting family.
