Construction is progressing on Van Alstyne’s inaugural rooftop lounge and bar, with owner Tami Hayes targeting an opening date around January 1.
The project involves transforming a century-old structure on Jefferson Street into The Emerald. Hayes described the process as building her vision brick by brick, noting that she has long desired to own both a bar and a downtown property in the city.
The facility’s design incorporates metal and wooden beams to create a modern aesthetic while attempting to respect the historic nature of the existing building. Hayes expressed hope that the venue will eventually draw visitors from outside the area, similar to how residents travel to McKinney or Dallas for dining and entertainment.
City officials view the development as part of a broader strategy to revitalize Van Alstyne’s downtown district. City spokesperson Mike Shaw emphasized the importance of preserving the historical character of the unique downtown area while supporting new business growth.
Hayes noted that the building holds personal significance, having once served as a popular spot along the railroad in the late 1800s. She described the current project as a full-circle moment for the property and expressed excitement about contributing to the city’s ongoing development.
