Matthew Wall, a 21-year-old Marine corporal, is receiving treatment in an intensive care unit after a motorcycle accident on FM 121 resulted in a spinal cord injury and other critical trauma. The incident occurred on July 15 in Van Alstyne, Texas, where Wall was traveling to his employment at a John Deere facility.
Wall’s cousin, Cassie Bailey, stated that the young man was riding his motorcycle to work after his truck failed to start. According to Bailey, a vehicle emerged from the side of the road and stopped directly in Wall’s path. Emergency responders spent approximately one hour stabilizing him at the scene before he was transported via Care Flight to Medical City Plano.
Medical reports indicate Wall sustained a T6 spinal cord injury, which has left him without sensation from the chest downward. Additional injuries include a fractured wrist, a small brain hemorrhage, and a partially collapsed lung. Following initial surgery, he required further procedures to address a spinal fluid leak.
Complications arose after a chest tube was removed, leading to his placement on ECMO, a device that functions as an artificial lung.
Wall has remained in the ICU since the July 15 crash. Bailey noted that doctors have offered positive updates regarding his condition as of July 27, and his family is monitoring his progress daily. She expressed relief that he survived the initial trauma, stating she had feared the worst immediately after the accident.
Before the accident, Wall had graduated early from Blue Ridge High School to enlist in the Marines at age 17. He has served for four years and holds the rank of corporal. In addition to his military service, he worked full-time as a mechanic and was enrolled in online courses at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
