Van Alstyne High School senior Luca Raner has been awarded the Texoma Excellence in Fine Arts Scholarship. The $1,000 award was presented by Sherman Chevrolet and Texoma Chevy Dealers in recognition of Raner’s achievements in percussion and his contributions to the VAHS band program.

Raner spent four years with the VAHS drumline, earning two-time Texas 4A All-State percussionist honors and two-time Outstanding Performer in Solo & Ensemble status. He was also selected to perform with the Arsenal Drum & Bugle Corps in 2026. His nomination came from VAHS teacher Dacia McBryde, who described him as an excellent student and a leader of the senior class.

"Not only is he an excellent percussion student, an excellent member of our band, he is truly a leader of the senior class," McBryde said. "He leads by example and sets a wonderful example for the underclassmen and all of his peers."

Raner balanced advanced-level classes, Student Council, community service, and a 4.79 GPA while tutoring less-experienced musicians. He noted that his time in drumline taught him work ethic and life lessons applicable beyond music.

"It’s a great opportunity. I’m very blessed," Raner said regarding the award. "It was a shock — a total shock." He expressed gratitude to McBryde for recognizing his efforts, calling her one of his favorite teachers.

After graduation, Raner plans to attend a four-year university to major in engineering. While he does not intend to pursue music as a career, he hopes to continue performing with a college band and percussion line. His advice for younger musicians is to enjoy their playing, push boundaries, and attempt challenges even if they seem difficult.

"Try to push your own boundaries, and even if a challenge is way too hard for you or a piece of music is something totally out of your reach, just do it anyway," Raner said.
