The Dallas Cowboys have signed linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, TX, who confirmed prior discussions with the team before training camp. Entering his 15th season in the NFL, Miller aims to bolster the Cowboys' defense, especially in pass protection, bringing 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's signing intensifies competition at the edge rusher position, potentially putting the roster spots of several players at risk. He is expected to primarily play as a left outside linebacker, a role that defensive coordinator Christian Parker will utilize during passing plays.
Currently, Rashan Gary, acquired via trade this spring, holds the starting left outside linebacker position, while rookie Malachi Lawrence is also training for that role.
On the right side, Donovan Ezeiruaku, in his second year, is expected to take on the right outside linebacker position, with James Houston likely filling a significant rotational role. This situation leaves limited chances for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same spot and must prove their worth to secure a position on the 53-man roster.
Liufau, in particular, could have trade value due to his potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. The Cowboys are also evaluating other candidates, including Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for promising players.
