The SMU Mustangs are enhancing their wide receiver group with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move follows the graduation of top receivers Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players. In his absence, redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has stepped up, highlighting Smith's size and capability for contested catches, as well as Hale's speed and agility.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, is looking to bounce back after a severe knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season, but he has shown promise at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which are expected to bolster the team's offensive strategy. Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, known for his aggressive playing style that fits well with SMU's downfield approach.
With the season opener against Florida State on September 7 approaching, the team is focused on building chemistry and finalizing their depth chart. The competitive environment created by Hale and Smith is already enhancing the performance of the Mustangs' offense, according to cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward.
