Klassen Delivers on the Mound

Rookie George Klassen was the defining factor in a 3-1 victory for the Los Angeles Angels over the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on Wednesday, August 19. The Angels' starter threw seven innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven batters. He walked three hitters but surrendered no earned runs to secure the win, improving his record to 2-1.

Angels Build a Comfortable Lead

The Angels took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Schanuel singled to center, driving in Meckler. The margin widened in the fourth when Lowe hit a 345-foot home run to left field. In the fifth, Neto doubled to shortstop, allowing Schanuel to score and extending the Angels' lead to 3-0.

The Angels scored all three of their runs during these first five innings, establishing a cushion that they would maintain for the remainder of the contest.

Astros Strike Back Late

Houston found some life in the eighth inning when Smith launched a 415-foot home run to left field, cutting the Angels' lead to 3-1. The Astros managed only that single run in the entire game. Their pitching staff combined to limit the damage, with Cristian Javier taking the loss after pitching four innings.

Javier allowed five hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out five.

Bullpen Secures the Victory

The Angels' bullpen provided a solid finish to protect the lead. Jose Fermin pitched one-third of an inning, allowing two hits and one earned run. Ryan Watson followed with two-thirds of an inning, striking out one without allowing hits or earned runs.

Ben Joyce closed the game with one inning of work, striking out two batters without allowing a hit or an earned run to earn the save. His record as a reliever now stands at 3 saves.

The Houston Astros fell to a 63-63 record, while the Los Angeles Angels improved to 50-76. The game featured exactly two home runs, one by each team. Attendance at Daikin Park was 22,767. No other scoring plays occurred, and the Angels' three-run total remained intact until the final out.
