As the Dallas Cowboys near the end of their training camp in Oxnard, the team is identifying both strengths and weaknesses. The offense, led by quarterback Dak Prescott and featuring standout wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, is anticipated to be a strong aspect of the team.
Concerns have arisen regarding the depth of the offensive line. Although the starting five are confirmed, the Cowboys are still evaluating the best candidates for backup roles. A significant issue has emerged with the backup center position.
Veteran Matt Hennessy, initially expected to step in for starter Cooper Beebe, has been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a neck injury, creating a notable gap in depth.
In light of this, T.J. Bass has been designated as the main backup center, despite his limited experience in that role. Bass, recognized as the top backup offensive lineman, has primarily played guard and has started in 10 games over the last three seasons. The team acknowledged his potential by offering him a second-round tender worth $5.76 million.
During the first preseason game, Bass took the field at center for two series before Nick Leverett, a veteran signed to the practice squad last November, took over. Leverett has more experience at guard but has one career start at center, which occurred in 2024. Following the preseason win, Leverett was seen practicing extensively as the backup center, while Bass returned to guard.
